Dynamic Russian folk & classical music performed by virtuosos of the balalaika and the accordion
Cabaret Russe is a musical duo that creates a dynamic musical listener-experience. The result is a sophisticated array of Russian folk songs, virtuoso classical works by Rachmaninoff and Andreyev, and one of the most famous of all tangos, "Jalousie".
Russian virtuoso Aleksei Siniavski is a master of the balalaika, a 3 string-instrument usually used for simple folk tunes. In his hands, however, it becomes an advanced classical instrument. A graduate of the Leningrad (St. Petersburg) Conservatory, Siniavski was for several years a member of the prestigious Andreyev Orchestra, Russia's premier symphonic balalaika orchestra. Since 1993 he has resided in Philadelphia and currently is involved in many projects.
Jon Persson plays another seemingly primitive instrument, the accordion. Nevertheless, he produces a very high level of musical output not expected by unitiated audiences. He performs on both the Russian chromatic-button version known as the "Bayan", as well as the Italian piano-keyboard accordion. Persson is a graduate of the University of Washington, and lives in Seattle.

The Piano

Jon Persson plays a wide variety of styles on the piano, ranging from classical (Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, and Debussy, just to name a few) to pop favorites from the 20’s through the 90’s;  Broadway show tunes, French, Italian, German and Viennese songs, and Latin tangos, as well as avant-garde tangos by Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla.

The Russian Bayan/БАЯН

The Russian cousin of the piano-accordion and chromatic-accordion is the bayan.  This is an amazingly complex and powerful creation, capable of producing an astonishing variety of sounds. A very versatile instrument, capable of interpreting jazz, Broadway, Russian gypsy, traditional Argentine tangos, as well as avant-garde tangos by Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla, Baroque and Romantic classics by the Great Masters, and much more.
